Golf and Prolotherapy
Ross Hauser, M.D.

Chronic back pain had plagued Ed Fiore throughout his pro career, enough so that he had already made plans to retire from the PGA tour and take up a career as a charter-boat captain. In 1996 these retirement plans were put on hold when Fiore scored a stunning come from behind victory over Tiger Woods and Andrew Magee in the Quad City Classic. By 1998 however, retirement was back in Fiore’s mind as chronic back pain limited him to three disappointing tournament appearances, making the cut only at the Doral-Ryder Open and a tie for 67th place.

It is estimated that 80% of all Americans will suffer from chronic back pain (pain lasting for more than 6 months) at some point in their lives.

For Ed Fiore, following his biggest (and fourth) tour victory, now was not the time to be a statistic. "I was given the diagnosis that ends a pro career, extensive and disabling arthritis of the back," says Fiore.

"But I was not ready to give up the tour at forty-four!"

In 1998 a desperate Fiore came upon a book by Oak Park physician Ross Hauser, M.D. titled "Prolo Your Pain Away." In the book Dr. Hauser described his successes at curing chronic pain with a relatively obscure treatment called Prolotherapy.

The golfing industry has long addressed the problems of chronic back pain, from specialized putters to exercise videos designed to strengthen stomach muscles to ease back pressure. Yet to many, these solutions did not cure their chronic back pain and they were forced to give up the game.

"I could not even swing a club," Fiore adds, "I decided that my best and last chance to return to the tour was Prolotherapy".

For golfers, back pain begins when weak ligaments and tendons cause the spine to become "unstable." Vertebrae begin to slip, move and rotate from their proper position, causing pressure on the nerves. Limited results in pain alleviation may be achieved with cortisone shots and other
anti-inflammatory drugs  but these do not address the cause of the pain. Temporary pain suppression is not a cure for the underlying problem, ligament and tendon weakness. Advocates of the technique say Prolotherapy is the long-term solution to chronic pain because it strengthens the ligaments and tendons so they can move the vertebrae back into their proper places.

Prolotherapy involves the injection of a natural solution (something as simple as a sugar or salt solution, cod liver oil or corn extract) into the area where the ligaments have either been weakened or damaged through injury. The injection is given at the point where the ligament connects to the bone. With this injection, the prolotherapist causes the body to heal itself through the process of
inflammation.

"Prolotherapy is extraordinarily effective, safe, and can get the golfer back to his game quickly," says Dr. Hauser, he himself a former 4 handicap. "It’s not only effective at back pain, but other areas of pain that afflict golfers such as at the hip, knee, elbow and shoulder joints".

"There are a lot of players on the PGA tour suffering with chronic pain," says Fiore, "If they ask I will tell them about Prolotherapy".

Adds Dr. Hauser, "There’s nothing more rewarding then getting a call at our missionary clinic in Thebes from a patient, in this case Ed (Fiore) telling me how Prolotherapy has changed his life. Ed called to tell me that he just shot a 70 in the first round of the 1999 Hawaiian Open, and that his back "felt great."

There is no known cure for arthritis. Prolotherapy and nutritional supplements can help alleviate, reverse, or end arthritic pain by treating an underlying cause that contributes to degenerative disease, ligament laxity. Strengthening ligaments and other connective tissue can help prevent bone on bone arthritis from developing.
